Requirements
Regardless of your major, any Appalachian student can obtain the Global Connections Certificate, provided that the following criteria are met:
Foreign Language (3 Hours)
Students should have mastered a foreign language at the intermediate level as indicated by the completion of the three hours of language 1050 or higher. Learn more about the foreign language requirement here.
International Experience (Minimum 3 Hours)
Students must participate in an international service-learning program or in a short-term study abroad program in a location relevant to their language of study. These programs must involve at least one three-hour course. Learn more about study abroad opportunities here.
International Content (9 Hours)
Students must take nine credit hours of "international content" coursework in addition to the foreign language coursework required. Courses with international content offer new ways to see the world without (or before) leaving Boone. Courses that count in this area include courses from Foreign Language, Global Issues and History. Please consult with the faculty advisor for other courses.
Community Service
Students must complete at least 40 hours of service or outreach related to multicultural issues and/or study abroad experiences. Learn more about community service opportunities here.
Reflection
Students will document their experiences in a portfolio that will include at least one final reflection paper (6-8 pages) specifically addressing the local and global connections of their experiences. View the requirements for the final reflection here.
For full requirements, see the 2024-25 Undergraduate Bulletin.
